Flooring Installation Cost in Canada in 2026: Hardwood, Vinyl Plank, Laminate and Tile
2026 CAD cost per square foot for hardwood, engineered, vinyl plank, laminate and tile flooring installed in Canada, plus prep and removal costs.
Flooring prices vary widely because the material and the prep are separate costs. Here are typical 2026 installed ranges, then the extras that move a quote.
Installed cost per square foot
- Laminate: about $3–$8
- Vinyl plank (luxury vinyl): about $4–$10
- Engineered hardwood: about $8–$18
- Solid hardwood: about $10–$25
- Porcelain or ceramic tile: about $10–$25, more for large formats or patterns
- Carpet: about $3–$8
A 1,000 square foot main floor with mid-range engineered hardwood often lands around $10,000–$18,000 once removal, underlay and trim are included.
Extras that change the total
- Old flooring removal and disposal: about $1–$3 per square foot
- Subfloor repair and levelling: can be minor, or several thousand dollars on uneven floors
- Baseboards and transitions: often forgotten
- Stairs: priced per step, usually far higher than flat floor
- Furniture moving: sometimes included, sometimes extra
Moisture and basements
Below-grade floors need moisture-aware choices (vinyl plank or engineered products rated for it, with a proper vapour barrier). Tell clients when a moisture issue should be solved first. See our basement waterproofing guide.
Acclimation and timing
Hardwood needs time to acclimate to the home's humidity, especially in our dry winters. Build that into the schedule you quote.
Quoting flooring jobs
Measure each room, add a waste factor (usually 5–10%, more for diagonal or patterned layouts), and list material, labour, underlay, removal, trim and levelling as separate lines. Installers using quoting software for flooring installers can do the square-footage maths and taxes automatically.
