Cost to Install a Heat Pump in Canada in 2026 (Ductless, Central and Cold-Climate)

2026 CAD price ranges for ductless mini-splits, central air-source and cold-climate heat pumps in Canada, what drives the cost, and how to quote the job.

Heat pumps have moved from a niche product to one of the most requested HVAC upgrades in Canada. Homeowners want to know the price before they call, and contractors need to quote it without leaving money on the table. These are typical 2026 ranges. Actual quotes vary with the home, the region and the equipment brand.

Typical installed cost by system type

  • Ductless mini-split, single zone: about $3,500–$6,500 installed
  • Ductless multi-zone (2–4 heads): about $7,000–$16,000
  • Central air-source heat pump (replacing an air conditioner, using existing ducts): about $7,000–$16,000
  • Cold-climate central system or high-capacity unit for colder regions: about $10,000–$20,000+
  • Ground-source (geothermal): commonly $25,000–$50,000+ because of the loop installation

What drives the price

Cold-climate rating

Standard heat pumps lose capacity in deep cold. Units rated to operate efficiently at very low outdoor temperatures cost more, but in most of Canada they are the right choice, and a quote should state the rated capacity at a low temperature, not just the nominal tonnage.

Electrical capacity

Older homes with a 60 or 100 amp panel may need an upgrade before a heat pump can be added. A panel upgrade is a separate line on the quote, often $2,500–$5,000 or more, and a common source of surprises if it is not flagged at the site visit.

Ductwork condition

Existing ducts sized for a gas furnace do not always suit a heat pump's airflow. Sealing, resizing or adding returns can change the total significantly.

Backup heat and controls

Many installs keep a furnace or electric backup for the coldest days. Controls that switch between sources add cost but protect comfort and operating cost.

Rebates and incentives

Federal, provincial and utility programs have supported heat pump installs, but amounts, eligibility and funding status change often. Check each program's current rules before you promise anything, and see our guide to Canadian rebates for contractors for how to mention them in a quote without overpromising.

How to quote a heat pump job

Break the quote into equipment (model and capacity), installation labour, electrical work, line sets and pad or brackets, commissioning, permits, and old-equipment removal. State the warranty on parts and labour, and list the exclusions: panel upgrades, drywall repair, ductwork changes. HVAC contractors using quoting software built for the trade can produce a clean, itemized estimate on site, which matters when the homeowner is also getting two other quotes that week.
